The history of Isola Comacina begins in Roman times, when it was an important religious and military center. In the Middle Ages, the island became a flourishing fortified city, known as the “Third Rome” for its wealth and power. The rise of the Republic of Como led to a period of rivalry and conflict, culminating in the destruction of the island in 1169.

Centuries of oblivion

After its destruction, Isola Comacina remained uninhabited for centuries. It wasn’t until the 19th century that the island was rediscovered by artists and intellectuals who appreciated its romantic charm and wild beauty. Among them was Count Alessandro Volta, the inventor of the electric battery, who built a villa on the island.

A new beginning

In 1919, the island was purchased by the FAI, Fondo Ambiente Italiano, which began its restoration and enhancement. Today, Isola Comacina is an open-air museum, open to the public from March to November.
