Its history begins in the 18th century when Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini commissioned the construction of a noble residence. Over the centuries, the villa has had several owners, including Count Luigi Porro Lambertenghi, who made it a center of culture and social life.
In 1919, the villa was purchased by Butler Ames, an American officer who fell in love with Lake Como. Ames restored the villa and enriched it with works of art and relics from his military career. Upon his death, the villa passed on to the FAI, Fondo Ambiente Italiano, which turned it into a museum open to the public.
